Glad to see this debate over the terminology VLE and MLE is taking place.
The 'cynical' comment "that the mythical fully working, cross-college MLE
does not exist yet?" may be factually correct but work is going on to make
it a reality in the near future. Readers will probably be aware of the JISC
Interoperability pilots work to do just this. Reports from those pilots will
be available early in 2002 indicating the success or otherwise of vendors in
making true interoperability a reality. Watch this space.

Also a plea - Please try to use the same terminology (i.e. not interchanging
VLE and MLE) because it makes it easier if everybody really is talking about
the same thing! Definition contained within the circular at

Hope that is helpful

The terminology, the difference between MLEs and VLEs, is confusing. We are
using it in the JISC sense, where MLE includes the whole learning
environment, including off-line learning. VLE (which is what we are
concerned with) is the online delivery method, including tracking,
assessment etc. This is explained in a diagram at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/pub00/req-vle.html
Admittedly, people still use VLE and MLE interchangeably though (as do I
sometimes).
