Wouldn't it be a worthwhile exercise to raise the profile of VLEs and make sure
that people know what what they are before investing money?
I'm not advocating trying to satisfy everyone within an institution, just
pointing out that 'most used system' doesn't necessarily equate with 'preferred
system'.

Yes - totally. I think the decision to buy a VLE is always a compromise.
Mostly it comes down to money available.

Very interesting example. Nominally everyone within our institution is supposed
to use the same e-mail client and web browser (Netscape). This, however, is not
the case. In my office alone there are several different combinations and
preferences. It would be nice if this could be avoided with use of VLE as this
takes away many of the benefits. I don't think that there is a solution to this
though, it is nearly impossible to get everyone using the same thing.
A solution is to look at ways in which different VLEs (and MLEs) can
interoperate and talk to each other to allow the student to have a seamless
experience. These are the concepts that the ANGEL project is looking at.
Wow - I brought that back round to myself pretty well! ;-p
