Thanks, Peter.
It took quite a while to get the Intranet buzzing, but once it was people
started (literally) grabbing me in the corridor...
Of course, part of the appeal was that I did a lot of the work for the
teachers! I'd take 'Word' notes and convert them into web pages, but with a
lot of 'added value' - illustrations, apposite web links and so on. As an
example, one of the history lecturers had written essay-style handouts on
various aspects of the A-level course. I turned these into sets of web
pages, broken down into sections that were easy to read on the screen. I'd
find pictures and maps relating to whatever was being discussed, and built a
'biography' section - every time an individual was mentioned by name, there
was a hyperlink that took you to a page about that person, including a
photograph and details of his life and historical importance, and maybe
links to further Internet material about him. (I now know far more about the
various personalities of Nazi Germany than I ever wanted to!)
Another 'selling point' was telling everybody how they could spend less time
slaving over a hot photocopier. If notes were available online, students
could be sent to read (and print if they wished) their own. A student who
missed a lesson would be able to catch up.
Hmm. The lecturer at the computer next to me is painstakingly creating a
'multiple-guess' quiz for Application of Number... so I've just shown him
how easy it is to make an online one. There's the rest of my afternoon gone
:-)
But that's an example. It helps to be an excessively nosey person. I look at
what people are doing, and then float ideas at them. If they look
interested, I pursue it.
