See the chapters "Land Use Impacts on Transportation" and "Transit Oriented
Development" in our Online TDM Encyclopedia, available free at
http://www.vtpi.org. They include several studies of land use impacts on
transit use. The following are particularly relevant:
Cambridge Systematics, The LUTRAQ Alternative /Analysis of Alternatives,
1000 Friends of Oregon (Portland; www.friends.org), 1992.
Cambridge Systematics, The Effects of Land Use and Travel Demand Management
Strategies on Commuting Behavior, Travel Model Improvement Program, USDOT
(www.bts.gov/tmip), 1994.
Robert Cervero and Kara Kockelman, "Travel Demand and the 3Ds: Density,
Diversity, and Design," Transportation Research D, Vol. 2, No. 3, Sept.
1997, pp. 199-219.
Lawrence Frank and Gary Pivo, "Impacts of Mixed Use and Density on
Utilization of Three Modes of Travel: SOV, Transit and Walking,"
Transportation Research Record 1466, 1995, pp. 44-55.
John Holtzclaw, Using Residential Patterns and Transit to Decrease Auto
Dependence and Costs, National Resources Defense Council www.nrdc.org,
funded by the California Home Energy Efficiency Rating Systems, 1994.
PBQD, Transit and Urban Form, Transit Cooperative Research Program, Report
16, Transportation Research Board (www.nas.edu/trb), 1996.
Of course, density is just one of several land use factors that affect
transit use. A combination of transit-supportive land use factors (i.e.
"Transit Oriented Development") can have a significant impact on transit use.
