Research Scholarship in Transportation,
Institute of Transport Studies, Department of Civil Engineering,
Monash University
Project Title: Investigating the Concept of "Total Transport"
Research Outline
As part of the Australian Key Centre in Transport Management, the
Institute of Transport Studies at Monash University (ITS Monash),
located in the Department of Civil Engineering, has an international
reputation for its transport education programs and research
activities. Thanks to funding provided by the Victorian Minister of
Transport, ITS (Monash) invites applications for a research
scholarship to investigate the concept of "total transport." This is
an excellent opportunity to undertake a Doctoral or Masters
research degree with one of the most active and dynamic university-
based transport groups in Australia.
The need for this study stems from an ever-growing concern about
how to provide practical solutions to personal mobility while
keeping adverse social and environmental impacts to a minimum.
This investigation will consider how the various modes of
transportation can be used (perhaps in combination) to complete
travel in a more efficient and effective manner. The study will use
existing data sources from the Victorian Department of
Infrastructure and the Bus Association of Victoria but will also
utilise new technological innovations for the automatic collection of
personal mobility data. It is anticipated that the major gains will be
experienced in middle and outer suburban areas and subsequently
these will be the main focus regions for the research.
Applicants
The applicant should hold an honours undergraduate degree in civil
engineering or other disciplines related to transport. You will need
an aptitude for independent research, quantitative analysis and an
interest in innovative data collection techniques and analysis.
Knowledge and experience of travel data collection techniques,
travel behaviour, transportation\land-use modelling, and geographic
information systems are also desirable. It is expected the
research will be undertaken towards a Doctor of Philosophy.
Benefits
The scholarship will be for $22,000 tax-free and will last for three
years. Supplementary funds for conference travel will also be
available.
Starting Date
Preferred starting date is mid-February, 2002 with the agreement of
the successful applicant.
Applications
Completed applications should comprise transcripts, your
CV/resume, and a cover letter outlining your research interests that
are relevant to this application (e-mail applications are
acceptable). Further details of the project are available on the ITS
Monash web site accessed through:
http://www-civil.eng.monash.edu.au. (Under Recent News). All
applications and enquiries should be directed to Dr Stephen
Greaves or Professor William Young.
