Dear colleagues,
I agree with Sonal's comments made in the previous e-mail and I
would like to express my additional view on one of his points in
regard to the possible benefits of chaos in the traffic stream.
Rather than looking at junctions, I carried out a study on multilane
uninterrupted traffic flows of another developing country. I found
that prevailing traffic and roadway conditions play a major role. The
effects of untidiness being positive or negative may depend on the
composition of traffic. More mixed flow may provide better
utilization of lateral space across the carriageway. With non-
existence of small vehicles such as motorcycles, the operation
drops well below the road capacity. Opening the hard shoulder to
traffic may improve the throughput, but the convenience is in
question.
In short, with traffic composition of mainly cars, buses and lorries,
my findings indicated more negative effects of untidiness on the
operation of uninterrupted traffic flow.
For more discussion of the topic, my details are as follows.
Regards, Bani.
