excellence in scholarship and research.

Assistant Professor in Human Geography

Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in Human
Geography in the Department of Geography. The appointment, which is
subject to availability of funding, will initially be made on a three-year
fixed-term basis, tenable preferably from September 1, 2001 or as soon as
possible thereafter, with a possibility of renewal.

The Department, as the earliest and a well-established geography department
among the tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, has its own Map Library,
three specialized laboratories and a wide range of equipment, materials and
personnel to support teaching and research. Further information on the
Department can be obtained through the Web at http://geog.hku.hk.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Geography or a closely related
field, relevant tertiary teaching experience, a strong research background,
and a good publication record. Candidates with the possibility of an
imminent completion of the doctoral programme will be considered, but the
appointee in that category would be appointed at a lower level until the
Ph.D. requirement is met. The Department is seeking candidates with a
focus on China and its regions. Specialization is open but preference will
be given to candidates with expertise in any of the following areas:
cross-border trade and investment, producer services, information
technology, geopolitical economy, political geography, transnationalism and
migration studies, cultural geography, and tourism. Additional expertise
in the areas of philosophical issues in geography and geographic research
methods will be an advantage. The appointee will be expected to
participate in teaching and graduate supervision of the Department's new MA
in China Area Studies Programme which will soon admit students.

Applicants should submit an application form, a curriculum vitae, a
statement of professional interests and accomplishments, and arrange to
have three confidential reference reports sent by the referees to the
Assistant Registrar (Appointments), Registry, The University of Hong Kong,
Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong, within two weeks of the closing date.

Annual salary [attracting 15% (taxable) terminal gratuity] for an Assistant
Professor (in the grade of Lecturer) is on an 11-point scale, with starting
salary depending on qualifications and experience: HK$554,280 - 925,980*.

* An appointee with an annual salary at HK$740,640 or above may be
considered for the award of the title of Associate Professor on the basis
of academic merits and achievements.

At current rates, salaries tax will not exceed 15% of gross income. The
appointment carries leave, medical and dental benefits, an allowance for
children's education in Hong Kong, and, where appropriate, a financial
subsidy under the Home Financing Scheme for reimbursing either the actual
rental payment or the mortgage repayment up to the relevant maximum
entitlement may be provided.

Further particulars and application forms can be obtained at
http://www.hku.hk/apptunit/; or from the Appointments Unit (Senior),
Registry, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (Fax (852) 2540 6735 or
