Assistant Professor in Human Geography, The University of Hong Kong
Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in Human
Geography in the Department of Geography, The University of Hong Kong. The
appointment, which is subject to availability of funding, will initially be
made on a three-year fixed-term basis, tenable preferably from 1 September
2001 or soon thereafter, with a possibility of renewal.
The Department is seeking candidates with a focus on China and its regions.
Specialization is open but preference will be given to candidates with
expertise in any of the following areas: cross-border trade and investment,
producer services, information technology, geopolitical economy, political
geography, transnationalism and migration studies, cultural geography, and
tourism. Additional expertise in the areas of philosophical issues in
geography and geographic research methods will be an advantage. The
successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching and
graduate supervision of the Department's new MA in China Area Studies
Programme which will soon admit students.
Applicants must have a PhD degree in Geography or a closely related field,
relevant tertiary teaching experience, a strong research background, and a
good publication record. Candidates with the possibility of an imminent
completion of the doctoral programme will be considered, but the successful
candidate in that category would be appointed at a lower level until the
PhD requirement is met.
The Department, as the earliest and a well-established geography department
among the tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, has its own Map Library,
three specialized laboratories and a wide range of equipment, materials and
personnel to support teaching and research.
