CALL FOR PAPERS
Working Group on Urban Transformation in China and
Reorganization of the State in an Era of Globalization,
Urban China Research Network
In Conjunction With The Centre for China Urban and Regional
Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University
Proposes to organize the Group’s First Workshop alongside
with the 2002 AAG annual conference to be held at Los
Angeles, USA, in March 19-23, 2002. The workshop will
consist of:
I. A one-day pre-conference meeting of the Working Group.
This meeting is tentatively scheduled on March 19, 2002,
and will be held in the University of Southern California.
The purpose of the meeting is to allow Group members to
have ample of time to exchange findings and viewpoints on
the Group’s three research themes, and to map out the
Group’s research agenda over the next three years. To
recapitulate, the Group’s three research themes are:
1. To theorize urban restructuring and state
reorganization in China through the globalization debates
and scale relations;
2. To empirically analyse how the intersections
between domestic economic restructuring and globalizing
processes have affected China’s urban hierarchy and urban
agglomerations, and to what extent this has led to global
city-region formation in the Chinese context; and
3. To examine local conditions of urban
transformations brought by economic restructuring and
political and cultural globalization.
This one-day meeting will include: (i) panel discussions on
each of the above themes; and (ii) business meeting of the
Working Group. Colleagues are invited to take part in this
meeting and act as panel members in one or more of the
discussion sessions.
II. Paper Sessions in the AAG Annual Conference, probably
organized under the AAG China Specialty Group. Tentatively,
the session titles and session organizers are as follows:
1. Theorizing urbanization and urban transformation in
China (Carolyn Cartier and Wing-Shing Tang)
2. WTO and World Cities in China (Simon Zhao and
Weiping Wu)
3. Urban restructuring and the housing reform (Si-ming
Li, Fulong Wu and Youqin Huang)
4. Inequality, health problems and social unrest
(Christopher Smith)
Colleagues interested in giving presentations in any of the
above sessions are required to:
1. Register with the AAG online. The AAG website is:
www.aag.org/AnnualMeetings/intro.html.
The AAG deadline is August 31, 2001. But the Working
Group’s internal deadline in August 1, 2001, as we have to
register the paper sessions under AAG.
2. Submit to the AAG the program participation fee,
which is set at USD 155 for AAG members and USD 235 for non-
members. Again the form is available in the AAG website.
3. Send an abstract of your paper of not more than 250
words online to the AAG using the format detailed in the
AAG website.
4. Send one copy of the above materials to Dr Carolyn
Cartier, Department of Geography, 3620 S. Vermont Ave.,
University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-
0255 USA. (Email: [log in to unmask] Fax: (1) 213-740-
0056), or Dr Si-ming Li, Department of Geography, Hong Kong
Baptist University, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong (Email:
[log in to unmask] Fax: (852) 2339-5990).

in attending the Group’s First Workshop and the title of
the paper that you would like to present in the pre-
conference panel discussion sessions and also in the AAG
paper sessions to Dr Cartier or Dr Li or any of the session
organizers. Preferably, presentations to be given in the
pre-conference panel sessions should focus on the
theoretical and methodological issues, trying to pave the
way for future research. But colleagues wishing to give the
same paper they present in the AAG paper sessions in the
pre-conference panel sessions (but in greater detail) may
choose to do so. The deadline for submitting paper title
and paper abstract to Dr Cartier, Dr Li or any of the
session organizers is August 1, 2001.
Funding support of up to USD 500 per person for travel to
Los Angeles is available to core members of the Working
