my thumb!! It seems that the cable must have developed a fault. Is it possible to get
hold of replacement mice or a cable or to repair the cable? I really don't want to send my lovely Next to the knackers yard just yet...
After rule No 1 (Don't panic) rule No 2 must be "Never scrap black kit" as your screen, power supply etc. can rescue others.
I have two mice showing the same symptoms as yours, in each case there is a break in the red wire one inch out from the strain relief grommet. If you can't get a replacement (keep the old one!) repair is straightforward but fiddly:
Remove the lead and use a continuity checker to find out which wire is broken and where - this calls for patience and much flexing. Cut the lead either side of the grommet and drill it out. Trim the mouse plug leads at an angle so as to stagger your new
solder joints and away you go.
