Long ago when I did such things, I wrote a bit about rain. Here in the Big
Wet, rain is such a part of our life. A silly thing, but presented.
If I count right about 20.

How Many Words Are There For Rain?
mist -
sprits from tomorrow's water bottle
cut through insomniac rhythm
sprinkle -
minute multi-colored particles
color the donuts of our illusions
shower -
hi-tech Water Pik set on low spray
empties a stunted water heater
drizzle -
butterscotch and strawberry syrup
flavor sugar free low fat espresso
patter -
pitter drops collapse on rusty tin roof,
the sound of children fighting age
spit -
a little bit of solid waste ruins picnic,
ants curse god for broken promises
cats and dogs -
felines cry over the death of crows,
the dog star hidden behind Orion
soaker -
whirligigs and helicopter overhead,
my spew fertilizes toadstool and frogs
pelt -
thrown bones and tossed stones reign
over skinned shines and sunpeeled fruit
pour -
down, Lot tripped on root of the word,
spilled heavy whipping cream
stream -
trout fly fish for consciousness,
crack and snap troll banner words
torrent -
current flows through covert lines,
secrets known and unknowable
buckets -
mustangs race freedom across the plains,
we sally forth to meet the philistines.
gullywasher -
lockwashers exacerbate the folly
of holding on when you should let go
cloudburst -
helium zephyrs bump into trial balloons,
cotton puffs trail postman.
deluge -
prepositions prosper where articles
dance along margins of time
mizzle -
harness raced saddle across Western sky
hounded by the sound of bay windows
spatter -
old man dressed in rags waits for train,
wedding moves to an abandoned depot
drencher -
mad cow disease left the Scot's highlands
of aught but gorse, lochs and Englishmen
squall -
plastic baby bumpers, car seats swing
the night away looking for sails behind the mall

How many words are there for rain,
the gales that buffet our faint hopes,
lash against the door to drive dreams away?
How many words are there to
replace those blown away by storms
no forecaster predicted?
How many ways may we say
what we are driven to say
and say yet again?
