How things change
Things were always quiet round here.
Last excitement was back
when that black dog bit
a neighbour's sow.
Now the air feels darker.
Yesterday, I was browsing
the general store when
two men came in
to buy worms.
They were strangers,
polite, Middle Eastern,
smart business suits.
Sure didn't look like any
fishing-men I'd ever seen,
They started asking questions
about access to the aqueduct.
Hell, that supplies
the whole area with water.
I went home with it
in my head, thought a bit then
picked up the phone.
Felt kinda strange asking for the FBI,
expect they hear from a lot
of nuts these days,
but knew I had to report
what I'd seen and heard.
Seems like we've all moved
closer to the front line
since it happened.
