Hi there Friends,
~*~
Three Days Later
September 14, 2001
Air traffic has been banned
We've become so accustomed
to the noise we no longer
pay it any mind
The sky is dead quiet
We've been told to try
to go about our normal affairs
As we do our faces register a look
of wide-eyed vacancy
There's a hollow feeling
that grows with each breath
I've identified this as
a strange combination
of helplessness and horror
One of my normal affairs
is to paint the garage
a chore I've been trying to accomplish
for the past three summers
and only one more side to go
I crack open a fresh can of white
and hear a sound I haven't heard
in three days
Jets overhead
Jets coming this way
Jets in the sky
and my first reaction
is to jerk my head up
and my second reaction
is to crouch down
and my third reaction
is to cry
Paint spills in the sand
Jets roar overhead
and I cry on my knees
in the sand
behind the garage
Mike says Mary
come back in come on
Leave the TV off
and try to do some knitting
Those are just jets
carrying supplies
to those in need
I find I must leave
some of my normal affairs
to those with more courage
follow my husband into the house
and close the door
