Hello Friends,

Thanks for all the well-wishes and prayers; your heartfelt support is
appreciated more than you can know. :O) We are coping. My immediate family
is safe and sound, and we pray for those who were not as fortunate.

Strangely, if I may share this with you, under the circumstances, I read
an email this morning from a poetry publisher stating that he/she has been
receiving loads of poetry submissions and would absolutely not consider
publishing any poetry related to the subject of the recent terrorist
attacks on the US. The reasons given were that it was too soon, people are
still waiting, still griving, still freshly in shock, and that people
could best serve their community by donating whatever they can by way of
blood, money, time, food, shelter...etc.

These points are well taken, however, for some of us, poetry is a way of
grieving, of coping, of coming to terms with something that is beyond our
comprehension. Poetry is the way some of us deal with issues and with that
in mind...I can not, NOT write about it. Please know though, that I do not
have small children, mine are grown, however, my husband and I really were
told that prayers for the lost and/or survivors would not be permitted in
the schools. Go figure...anyway, I mean no disrespect in my continued
writing, it is what I do, it is how I cope.

Knocking At The Gate
September 12, 2001

We've been informed that prayer
is no longer permitted
in our public school
May we at least offer
a moment of silence
to do with as we choose
in respect

I've explained to my six year old
the reason your teacher said
there are no planes
allowed to fly today
is because the sky
is full of angels
making their way to heaven
and we must do all we can
to clear the way

A moment of silence
from each of us
may be just enough
for God to hear
the knocking at his gate

~*~

Cheerwell, Mary :O)
