on my last return to this country
passing through customs
I made acquaintance with a beagle
wearing a burgundy coat
and an inquisitive nose
he sniffed my trolley
then my bags and my feet
hard to tell from his face
but the wagging tail suggested pleasure
in welcoming me back home
he sniffed my crutch
tonight on the television
the same dog
the same coat
the same happily wagging tail
the same willingness to sniff everything
I believe that beagle
is a touch promiscuous
I am hurt
