We bought a lens of the proper focal length through the Edmund Scientific
mail order catalog for about $80 or so and had our machine shop construct
a focusable housing (two aluminum tubes that fit one inside the other,
linked by a geared knob and a brass gear track) that could be attached to
the LCD projector with its stock lens removed. A small diameter (10cm?)
lens was fine--brightness wasn't an issue and in fact we might install an
iris to dim the projector further.
A single lens inverts the image, but this was fine because most
projectors have controls to be able to flip the image in either direction.
The result was a functional projection system that cost thousands of
dollars less than an equivalent commercial lens, if you can even find what
you need.
