From my experience here at Michigan, I can NOT take a dat tape written on platform Y and read on platform Z. (I have tried solaris and sgi and linux). The only thing that seems to be truly platform independent is cd-rom which has the iso standard and rockridge extensions for long file names.

Can you provide us with a little more information?
Define 'technical problem'.
What is the exact error message are you getting? Is it a problem reading
the tape in general? parts of it? corrupted files? truncated files?
How was the DAT tape created? What was the exact command used to write the
files to tape (blocking factor, device (compressed, no-rewind, etc)? Was it
made using 'tar', 'dd', or was it created via a proprietary format (off of a
GE Signa MR for example) or 3rd party archive utility?
Can you read the tape on the Sun? Is it a SCSI tape?
Lots more basic questions?
What version of SunOS? what kind of Sun machine?
What linux kernel version? What tape driver are you using under linux?
Regards,
Michael

Subject: Reading DAT tar archives from SUN Unix to Linux under RedHat
Dear all
A technical suggestion
We are having a technical problem in reading on RedHat 6.2 Linux, tar
archives, collected under SUN unix on DDS I DAT tape driver
Has anyone experienced the same problem and has anyone got around it?
I would appreciate comments also from people using other flavours of Linux,
if the problem was solved succcessfully.
Many thanks
Eraldo
