Dear all,
Applications are invited from candidates with Bachelor or Masters level
qualifications on physics for a 3-year research studentship in the area of
bio-medical optics. The aim of the research programme is to measure the
fundamental properties of live human skin, including skin moisture, skin
pigmentation and the diffusion of externally applied substances through
skin.
The main approach is based on photothermal radiometry, where small, laser-
induced
changes of skin temperature are sensed by means of the emitted in infrared
heat radiation. The main requirement of the project, funded by the UK
Science
Research Council and Royal Society, is for the design and development of a
fibre-optics system to deliver the pulsed laser radiation to the
measurement point
and to collect the thermal infrared and the photoacoustic signals. Other
skills
developed by the student during the project include bio-medical measurement
science,
interpretation of measurements and scientific communication.
Therefore, for an ideal candidate, a sound physics background with a good
experimental
knowledge is a must, and any experiences in electronics or computer
interface programming is a bonus.
This project is part of an ongoing research programme of the Photophysics
Research
Centre of South Bank University. See
http://www.sbu.ac.uk/eeie/research/photo/ for further details.
The studentship pays a tax-free stipend, currently ŁUK 7600 per annum, and
tuition fees
for three years.
To apply, send a cv to the address below before the 31st March 2001.
