Teaching and Learning in Organisations
Managing Roles and Relations in Learning Contexts
Thursday 21 - Saturday 23 June 2001

Who the Course is for ...
Those who manage and lead organisations where learning is important for
staff - senior executives, heads and principals, inspectors and
advisers, trainers, those with team management responsibilities, as well
as those with direct responsibility for teaching and training in
organisations. Recent members have come from the UK, Ireland, Holland,
Belgium, Sweden and Norway.

How the Course works ...
This is an experiential Course. Three interacting events create the
process of the Course. One creates opportunities to learn by exploring
conscious and unconscious behaviour in a small group as it happens;
another examines the way different assumptions about teaching and
learning interact and affect behaviour within an organisation; the third
draws on the first two events to work in depth on live case studies of
teaching and learning brought to the Course by members.

Why the Course is important now ...
Organisational change is effective when those who work in institutions
can learn, can learn fast, and can pass on what has been learned to
others.
Effective learning has always involved a teaching function, even when
that has not been formally identified. Taking the role of manager
involves 'teaching' staff about new policies, new legislation, new
skills and new knowledge, as well as simply how to do existing jobs
better. In today's conditions the traditional models of the roles of
'teacher' and 'learner' need to be added to and extended. More
collaborative patterns are relevant, and issues of power and authority
have to be analysed more carefully. This course equips members to do
that.

Comments from last year's participants ...
I used the learning from the course to give my senior management team a
new way into an intractable problem (Strategic Development Manager,
NHS Trust)
I am much more willing to analyse the underlying motivational reasons
and believe in my analysis (Deputy Headteacher)
Those nearest to me in my work have commented on my increased assurance
since the course ... I focus on patterns and am clearer in my comments
(Senior University Lecturer)
