Professional Development Workshop
'A MATHS TOOLKIT FOR SCIENTISTS'
Date: - Wednesday, April 4th 2001
Time: - 10.30.-.16.00
Venue:- Heriot Watt University
Students entering HE come with a range of qualifications in
mathematics from GCSE's, GNVQ's and 'A' Levels. Many colleagues
report a serious decline in the students' mastery of basic maths which
hampers their progress in mathematically based subjects such as
physics, chemistry and engineering.
The aims of this workshop are to discuss the extent of the
'mathematics problem', to share information on the practice of
diagnostic testing and to exchange experience on ways of helping
students to acquire essential mathematical skills.
This workshop should be of interest to academics involved in the
teaching of any of the physical sciences or engineering or those
involved in service teaching of mathematics.
