SPRING 2001

THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

with Mark Hickling

Sunday January 14

We all want to be the best that we can be: to survive life's rigours as best we can and to be as stress free as possible. In his book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey explains how, by concentrating first on oneself, then on relationships to other people, we can set about solving personal and professional problems.
Understanding where we are going is of primary importance before we set out, otherwise we stand little chance of getting there. So in this day together we shall explore the seven habits and try to work out where each of us is heading.
We shall be spending some time looking at the Time Management Matrix and its different quadrants, as this seems to be the aspect that applies most to our business and personal lives. We shall attempt through exercises to better understand our goals and the ways of reaching them. To this end we will look at our perceptions of ourselves and those around us depending upon our centre of interest; and wonder whether this needs changing and if so how.

Mark Hickling has worked as a trainer and consultant in industry and visiting lecturer at postgraduate level in several universities in England, France and the United States. For the last 15 years he has been specialising in organisation management, and helping people to be the best they can be. Mark is a full member of both the Institute of Health Education and the International Stress Management Association.

A GROUP IS NOT A CIRCLE
-a new paradigm for groupwork

Peter Philippson

Sunday February 11

A group is any collection of people who are aware of the possibility if intercommunication. Whether or not people in a group actually communicate, who regards themselves as insiders and who as outsiders, and how ŒinsidersΉ and ŒoutsidersΉ interrelate, are all part of the group process. Whatever happens or doesnΉt happen in the group is to be understood in relation to the group processes. Its meaning is field dependent rather than absolute.
Groups start having a distinctive process almost immediately, although this gets elaborated and changed through the life of the group. Groups are sensitively dependent on initial conditions, the communication possibilities that define them, the geographical space(s) they occupy, how much they are defined by task, their mythology, who they perceive as leader or led, the state of mind of their members, the history of contributory subgroups and the cultural environment.
Groups so defined in a sense never end, and in another sense are always ending. In this group we shall explore the implications of the theory as the group evolves, rather than operating with a pre-defined structure.

Peter has an MSc in Gestalt Therapy and is a UKCP-registered Gestalt Therapist and Trainer. He is editor of ŒThe Nature of PainΉ and, with John Harris, co-author of ŒGestalt: Working with GroupsΉ, all published by the Manchester Gestalt Centre. A faculty member of Gestalt Therapy International, he has been a guest trainer for many training programmes internationally.

THE EROTIC
- a force to be reckoned with

Jacqui Sirota

Sunday March 4

The image of Eros, standing at the heart of our capital city , blind, immature, mischievous, causing havoc where he strikes should inspire fear and awe in all who value order and control. Erotic love can strike in any place, at any time. We can sometimes risk our lives, our careers, our families, our reputations and our sanity while in thrall to those devastating little arrows. The Arts, on all levels, from TV soaps and cartoons to the most sublime operatic creation, are largely devoted to the stories that unfold around it. It represents the forbidden, the foolish, the tragic and comic passions that underpin our lives. Our working lives are not immune. Organisations and groups are permeated with the hidden power and possibilities of Eros.
But Eros is a connecting force that binds us in unexpected ways, it gives us life and excitement. It moves the story on, draws us into new places, faces us with painful dilemmas, terrifies us, awakens us, wounds us forces us to grow and face both our creative and destructive powers. The day will offer opportunities for participants to explore some of the familial and cultural experiences that have informed the way the erotic is experienced in our lives.

Jacqui works with individuals and groups. She is a freelance trainer and consultant. She designs and conducts training workshops and team events for counsellors and workers in voluntary sector and other organisations.
