Having recently recovered a ship's bell with a Broad Arrow that is believed
to have emanated from Wm Dampier's HM ship Roebuck(1701), an ex fire ship,
I am presently seeking comparative data on late 17th Century ship's bells of
the Royal Navy for the lower rates 4-5 and lesser vessels, including fire
ships (of course)..
The bell found exposed on the seabed at Ascension island after an
uncharacteristic movement of sand from the beaches around Georgetown and now
en route the Mary Rose laboratories, together with an Indo-Pacific clam
shell found in similar circumstances, is not dissimilar in form to that
shown in John Adam's IJNA work (1974, 3.2) pp:270-1, on the British Frigate
Dartmouth (1690).
Can anyone provide me with further leads on the literature concerning RN
bells and/or lead me to a scholar/buff specialising in them.
The image is a JPEG... Pardon the naked bodies in the background.
With thanks.
