Greetings
I am looking at some of the concretions from the mid 17thc Salcombe
wreck. Several concretions have lead shot of diameter 16.4-16.7mm,
which would have been fired from a gun of ca.17mm diameter.
I am trying to work out what might have fired them. I have been going
through the list of lead shot references which Paulo Monteiro posted
(thanks, extremely useful). Richard Larnes' report on the VOC Campen
identifies larger and smaller shot, but not those around this
diameter.
Campen, 1627
17mm+ Musket
16.6mm ?
15.3-15.5 mm Caliver
Other published wrecks also have similar sizes shot:
Santo Christo de Castello, 1667
17mm Musket
16mm Carbine
13mm Pistol
Dartmouth 1690
16mm Carbine/ Musketoon
The Meresteyn, 1702
18mm Musket
16.5mm Musket
16mm Carbine/Musketoon
I understand that the diameter of muskets got smaller with time, so
the Meresteyn may be a read herring. What about the possibility of
them being from a carbine?
Someone has suggested a a fusil or fusee which was a light type
of musket, something like a carbine. Any thoughts?
Can any of you suggest any further references to research this or
anybody who might be able to help?
