Stretching Societal Boundaries
by Barbora Maroszova
http://www.tol.cz/look/TOLnew/article.tpl?IdLanguage=1&IdPublication=4&NrIssue=6&NrSection=2&NrArticle=493

A group of children lies on the floor, each on a mat. The children move
from one position to another, from time to time struggling to maintain
their balance, as the exercise requires standing on one leg. It could be
a normal physical education lesson--except the children are not jumping
or running around, and a yin-yang symbol graces the wall. The children
are practicing yoga. The Education Ministry's recent plan to introduce
yoga classes in state schools has caused quite an uproar in
conservative, Catholic-dominated Slovakia.

The Changing Face of Sarajevo
by Daria Sito
http://www.tol.cz/look/TOLnew/article.tpl?IdLanguage=1&IdPublication=4&NrIssue=6&NrSection=3&NrArticle=492

Sarajevo, once famous for crazy partying and spectacular New Year's
celebrations, has become a dark provincial town with few decorations.
Celebrations of Islamic holidays have shown that it's not a question of
money or post-war poverty but rather that the priorities have changed.
The Bosnian capital is still a multi-ethnic town--just barely--but new
cultural ideologists now define multi-culturalism as people living next
to each other rather than living together.

Later this week from TOL:

IN FOCUS: Crisis in Czech Television
A reportage from the 3 January demonstration, plus analysis of the
long-term impact on public television, plus interviews with some of the
rebel journalists.

OPINION: Putin's First Year

FEATURE: Kuchmagate

Friendship Ambassadors Foundation is pleased to announce its second
Balkan Youth Reconciliation Seminar to take place 7-14 January 2001 in
Budapest, Hungary. The goal of this three-session series is to provide
an opportunity for the youth of the Balkans to meet in an atmosphere of
tolerance, and to help them find a common path towards a new Balkan
Peninsula through cultural and artistic workshops. The organizers hope
that the second session of the series (which was conceived and launched
at the time of the Kosovo crisis) will open the gate leading to a
millennium of peace for these young people. To find out more about the

BEGGING WITH DIGNITY

TOL desperately needs a computer upgrade. We are working on six year old
machines and, as a nonprofit, do not have the funds to purchase new
ones. We need your help! Join the Guardian Foundation and Independent
Journalism Foundation in making TOL a better magazine by contributing to
our equipment fund -- tax deductible in the US! -- at
http://archive.tol.cz/fundcamp.html

*******************************************************

A Czech nonprofit dedicated to promoting independent journalism, TOL is
based in Prague and uses a network of local correspondents to provide
unique, cross-regional analysis. We encourage you to visit our site and
become part of a dynamic new media project dedicated to building
independent journalism in Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and
the former Soviet Union.
