I would be grateful if any colleagues could confirm or refute my
recollection that, in the Soviet era, the question 'A kak u vas s
snabzheniem?' (How are food supplies in your town?) was a common
conversation opener with visitors newly arrived in a provincial town.
I would like the information because I am writing a paper for the BASEES
conference on local and regional identities in Russia today.
