ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
SAFECOMP 2002 will be held on 10-13 September 2002 in Catania, Italy.
The European Workshop on Industrial Computer Systems, TC 7 on
Reliability, Safety, and Security (EWICS TC7) established SAFECOMP in
1979. http://www.ewics.org/
SAFECOMP is an annual 2.5-day event covering the state of the art,
experience and new trends in the areas of computer safety, reliability
and security regarding dependable applications of computer systems.
SAFECOMP provides ample opportunity to exchange insights and experience
on emerging methods and practical applications across the borders of the
disciplines represented by participants.
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
SAFECOMP focuses on safety-critical computer applications and is a
platform for knowledge and technology transfer between academia,
industry and research institutions. Papers are invited on all aspects
of dependability and survivability of critical computer-based systems
of systems and infrastructures. Due to the increasing integration and
evolution of hybrid systems, SAFECOMP emphasises work in relation to
human factors, system evolution, dependability and survivability.
Nowadays practical experience points out the need of multidisciplinary
approaches to deal with the nature of critical complex settings.
SAFECOMP, therefore, is open to multidisciplinary work enhancing our
understanding across disciplines. SAFECOMP welcomes original work
neither published nor submitted elsewhere on both industrial and
research experience. Examples of industrial and research topics
include, but are not limited to,
Industrial Sectors: Accident Reports and Management - Aerospace and
Avionics - Automotive - Banking and E-commerce - Bluetooth Devices -
Critical National Information Infrastructures - Distributed and
Real-time Systems - Euro Currency Transaction - Firewalls - Medical
Systems - Networking and Telecommunication - Open Source Software -
Power Plants - Programmable Electronic Systems - Railways -
Responsibility in Socio-Technical Systems - Robotics - Safety Guidelines
and Certification - Safety Standards - Safety-Critical Systems and
Infrastructures - Smart Card Systems
Research Areas: Fault Tolerance - Commercial-Off-The-Shelf and Safety -
Dependability and Survivability Analysis and Modelling - Dependability

PAPER SUBMISSION
Paper submissions are via the conference web site; submit full papers as
portable document format (pdf) or postscript (ps). Papers must clearly
show the name, postal address, email address, and fax number of the
contact author. 12 pages is the maximum admitted length for submitted
papers in the LNCS format; templates can be found at Springer-Verlag
web site. http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/
Papers exceeding the above limit may be rejected without review. Only
papers neither published nor submitted elsewhere may be submitted for
publication. The following declaration should be added to the submitted
paper
"All necessary clearances for the publication of this paper have been
obtained. If accepted, the author will prepare the final manuscript in
time for inclusion in the conference proceedings and will present the
paper at the conference."
The language for all paper submissions and presentations at the
conference is English, and no simultaneous translation will be provided.
CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS AND JOURNAL SPECIAL ISSUE
After acceptance by the Programme Committee, the final paper is required
in electronic version according to the file templates provided by the
publisher. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings
that will be distributed at the conference. Springer-Verlag will publish
the conference proceedings in the series Lecture Notes in Computer
Science (LNCS). http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/
Extended and revised versions of the best papers accepted for the
Conference will be peer-reviewed and published in a Special Issue of the
international journal Reliability Engineering and System Safety (RESS)
published by Elsevier. http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ress
TUTORIAL SUBMISSION
The day before the start of SAFECOMP 2002 is dedicated to tutorials.
Tutorial submissions are via the conference web site. A one page
tutorial proposal (1000 words) should accompany the submission
describing
the contents of the tutorial and the relevance to the conference.

CO-LOCATED AND COORDINATED EVENTS
SAFECOMP 2002 will be co-located and coordinated with ECCE-11 (8-11
September 2002). The ECCE-11 conference is organised by EACE - the
European Association of Cognitive Ergonomics. The ECCE series of
conferences has been organised biannually since 1982, thereby making it
the oldest conference series of its kind internationally. ECCE brings
together researchers in the domain of cognitive ergonomics, which aims
at combining cognitive engineering and technical information processing
system developments together to improve the design of joint interactive
systems.
The main theme of ECCE-11 is Cognition, Culture and Design.
Contributions that explore cognitive and cultural aspects of design
activity and technology use are encouraged. Submissions can address
theoretical, empirical or methodological aspects of this theme, and
can take the form of, e.g., papers, posters and panels.
Submissions could, for example, relate to the design and use of
technology in the following contexts: work, leisure, home, business
(including E-business), education, safety-related and complex work
systems.

THE HOST CITY
Catania is situated at the centre of the Ionian coast in eastern Sicily
and extends from the sea to the foothills of Etna, Europe's highest
active volcano. Catania has historically been a region of many cultures,
represented by different architectural styles (e.g., baroque) and
monuments (e.g., the Greek-Roman Theatre). Due to its geographical
position and history Catania represents a Mediterranean portal to
Europe.
In recent years the south of the city has become a centre of industrial
development. New information and communication technologies are now
flourishing in the Catania region, now called "Etna Valley"
technological zone.
CONFERENCE VENUE
The Catania Sheraton Hotel is an elegant resort located on the Cyclops
Coast, just 2 miles from the centre of Catania, and is located directly
across the street from the beach. Sheraton Catania Hotel has built an
excellent reputation for providing a beautiful and relaxing place to
stay. http://www.sheratoncatania.com
Additional Hotels and B&Bs are available near to the Conference Venue
and more information will be available in the conference web site.
