We are sorry to have to announce the recent death after a lengthy
illness of Emeritus Professor Theo Barker. Prof. Barker was a historian
in wide-ranging interests in the fields of social and economic history,
and will long be remembered by transport historians as the author (with
Michael Robbins) of the standard two-volume history of London's
transport, and for his tireless advocacy of the historiography of road
transport. In 1997 he was instrumental, as then-chair of the Transport
History Research Trust, in creating the THRT Lectureship in the History
of Urban Tranport within the IRS.
A memorial event is to be held in the New Year.
