Thursday 4 October at 7pm
Quark, n. (Phys.) One of three hypothetical components of elementary
particles [from: 'Three quarks for Muster Mark!' James Joyce, Finnegans

A Quark for Mister Mark (Faber 2000), is an anthology of poems about science
edited by poet Maurice Riordan and Jon Turney of University College London.
To mark National Poetry Day and to celebrate the links between creativity in
science and creativity in literature, the Royal Society is hosting an
evening of poetry readings selected by the editors. Amongst those joining
the editors to read their favourite poems will be Professor Richard Dawkins
FRS, Professor Richard Fortey FRS, Professor Frances Ashcroft FRS and poets,
Vicki Feaver and Michael Donaghy.
Maurice Riordan is the author of two highly acclaimed collections of poetry,
A Word from the Loki and Floods. He was educated at University College, Cork
- where he later taught - and at McMaster University in Canada. He now lives
in south London and teaches poetry at Morley College.
Jon Turney was formerly science editor of the Times Higher Education
