UNU/IIST, the International Institute for Software Technology, is a
Research and Training Centre of the United Nations University. It
serves developing countries to help them attain self-reliance in
software technology by training their young scientists and engineers.
UNU/IIST has a group of highly diverse, multi-national staff from
various backgrounds and cultures. It offers a pleasant and stimulating
environment at its new premises in Macau, and the opportunity to train
and work with people from many parts of the world, both in Macau and
on trips to developing countries. Scientists currently working at
UNU/IIST include Zhou Chaochen, He Jifeng, and Chris George. Dines
Bj{\o}rner (the founding director) and Kees Middelburg have also
worked here. For more information about UNU/IIST,
please visit the UNU/IIST home page: http://www.iist.unu.edu.
UNU/IIST currently has three vacancies for Research Fellows, for which
applications are invited by 30 June 2001.
The first two positions are in existing teams at UNU/IIST involved in
research and in training software engineers, researchers, and
academics from developing countries. Applicants for these two
positions should have the equivalent of a Ph.D. in computing science
or a related subject, and research interests relating to the
development of computer systems using formal engineering methods,
which is where UNU/IIST currently focuses its academic activities.
Industrial experience would be an advantage. The successful
candidates will be appointed for an initial two-year period with the
possibility of extension.
The third position is to start a new UNU/IIST activity on software
project management. The Fellow will present courses on software
project management, further develop UNU/IIST's course material in this
area, and train software engineers in Macau. Candidates should have
wide industrial experience in managing software projects. An interest
in teaching and research on software development methods would be an
advantage. The successful candidate will be appointed for a one or
two year period, with the possibility of extension if this activity
proves successful.
We expect to appoint people to these posts under Personal Service
Agreements. These will provide tax-free remuneration of up to USD
6000 per month, but without pension, insurance, education, or
relocation benefits. Exceptional candidates might receive
remuneration above this level.
Appointments to the first two positions are also possible based on the
L-3 level of the United Nations salary scale, which provides a lower
level of remuneration but includes other benefits.
An international selection committee will screen all applications and
review a short-list. The review will start on 30 June; late
applications may also be considered until the positions are
filled. Only short-listed applicants will be notified of receipt of
application as well as of the subsequent outcome.
Applicants must send detailed curriculum vitae, with names of at least
three referees, copies of diplomas, and (for the first two positions)
one copy of each of up to 5 of the most relevant publications to:
