(I have the unenviable distinction of having been shown a carbon of a
typescript of this poem by Alan Steele in the Men's Union bar at Glasgow
University in 1966 [before I knew Tom or his writing]. I came out with the
immortal critical comment, "Well, that's a load of shite, isn't it?"
That somewhat skewed judgement still makes me cringe even after lo! these
many years.)
