Most welcome, Joanne.
and apropos of not a lot, and too a lot, I dunno if anyone else knows this,
but one of the funniest things in the English language is a 'translation'
that the Dorset dialect poet William Barnes did of one of Queen Victoria's
State Opening of Parliament speeches into the aforesaid Dorsetshire brogue.
It's so funny because it upends power, by the simple act of transition from
one mode of speech to another it highlights the absurdity of all status, in
a way like Tom Leonard's Glasgie-speak version of the BBC six o'clock news,
but droller, and given that Barnes was a very conservative fella himself
it's doubly remarkable. Unfortunately I've lost my copy, several house-moves
ago, and too it really needs to be heard read aloud by an actor (or a
yokel!) but if anyone does know of it being about anywhere on the Web I'd
love to know.
Best
Dave
