although terra nulius was disproved on proof of ownership of land, i think
the indigenous population of australia existed and exists today in the
spatial mnemonic that is not landscape.
despite all attempts of genicide and clearing of the aboriginal people from
the land, there are still other spaces where they exist, which are not
physical, which will never be able to be conquered, surveyed, sub-divided.
i tend to agree with bob hodge in that australia can never really progess
until this matter is resolved. non-aboriginal australians will never feel
that they 'belong' until this is resolved, no matter how much they profess
a closeness, understanding and love for the land.
it's a matter of cultural rights rather than land rights, that is space
rather than place.
this is just my opinion.
