I saw the Andrew Bolt article and I have to say it was one of the most
appalling and grotesque examples of journalistic cynicism I've ever seen.
It was up there with the front page that featured the riots in the
detention centre at Woomera, with simply a big picture and the headline
BETRAYED.
Bolt is one of the columnists for the Herald Sun. I read him now and
again when I find the paper on the train. Reactionary is not the word -
he's a parody of all "decent, right thinking" attitudes. Racist, sexist
and - and this is not irrelevant - also a vicious spokesperson against
the immoral layabouts of the artistic community. Among other things he's
led an incredible smear campaign against the children's author John
Marsden.
Ms O'Donoghue's response to the article was printed widely, and not just
in the Herald Sun. There is a good chance that the printing of Bolt's
interview may have done more damage to the Herald Sun's credibility than
to Ms O'Donoghue's. I certainly hope so.
