Ali,
From Webster's New 20th Century Dictionary:
epic, [L. epicus; Gr epikos, an epic from epos, a word, that which is
related]
The definition then goes on to discuss the narrative and heroic style of an
epic, but makes no mention of length. A further quote: "pertaining to or
having the characteristics of a kind of poem which narrates a story, real or
fictitious, representing, in an elevated style, some signal action or series
of actions and events, usually the achievements of some distinguished hero."
Seems to sum up what you have been saying.
