I have this horrible feeling that, as human beings are moral creatures,
any decision we make, whether or not that choice is illusory, whether it
appears trivial or not, is an ethical decision; moreover, that our lives
and selves are created cumulatively second by second, on the fulcrum of
each second-by-second decision. I suppose such a view of ethics is an
existential one, and for me deeply embedded in a poetics. Following this
to its logical end need not only create unbearable weight, but also
freedom; it's not a question of dithering about each choice, but
attempting to become conscious, to understand what an act _is_.
Not that I've personally managed anything like existential sainthood, of
course; I get it wrong too often.
