Interesting, b/w Hacker's friend Jane Cooper and her writing about Tillie Olson writing about ironing.
Years ago, last American Bush administration I think, there was a scandal with the NEA and a group of artists: Mapplethorpe, etc. I saw a
show of works which funding was questioned. A woman, I don't remember her name, had assembled hundreds of white men's shirts. She burned
them with an iron and then gilded them -- or gold leafed the edges -- with an iron, and then stacked them in such a way that you realized the
ironing board covered with the burned and gilded shirts looked like a coffin.
I've sent them out since then.
