OK, OK, already, Josie and everyone else who pulled me up on this.
Obviously, I'm going to have to rethink and/or restate this. But two
provisional points:
Auden himself felt that the move to America in 1939 +did+ represent a
movement to a (relatively) more liberal society. Obviously, "liberal"
(here) +is+ relative ...
The other is that (more on this later) of the major and obvious changes
Auden makes, "Limestone" is one of the few to reflect what is apparently a
sexual toning-down. Why (only?) here?
