Erminia is correct about Islam never experiencing the Enlightenment.
Fundemental Islam seems to be an attempt to come to terms with it.
Regarding the 'Afghan Olympics' the British lost four wars against
the Afghans provoking Kipling's famous verses. Then the Russians
had their go and failed too. The Afghans love a fight with an outside
foe because otherwise they have to fight themselves. It will be
interesting to see how the American Empire does, but the radio
just now says that Bush is turning his attention to Iraq, a
more amenable target.
