Indeed, Douglas, they are as peripheral to the world as poets, and their
beliefs are as diverse, like all the languages of New Guinea. I know the
literature on aborigine beliefs is enormous, and extends far beyond Bruce
Chatwin.
I'm sure though that their beliefs include neither suicide bombing nor
George Dubbya and the New World Order.
