I am a Multics/Unix person who cut his teeth on Algol60, then
moved on to Fortran and Multics PL/I. I could never get the
hang of C. The only programming I have done the past ten years
is HTML. Coming from the mainframes I avoid Windows like the
plague and try and stick to MSDOS. I need a new computer as
I have lost the Web and new Windows98 to access Amazon. (Windows
3.1 has been phased out by the University). I only ever wrote
one program in Usercode (and it worked) and 2-3 in Basic.
When this discussion came up what I said to myself was have
they never heard of Xerox Parc but it is all revealed now.
I am interested in getting into LInux but I dont think I
am a technical enough person to try for it yet. I got a
book 'REbel Code' by Glyn Moody on Richard Stallman and
Linus a few months ago which I recommend. I have been on
the Internet since the beginning and vaguely remember our
first shots at Bath on DARPANET.
Regarding self-publishing I design my books/pamphlets using
Latex. I know nothing about Word. I do hire an expensive
printer. Those of you who have my books can see what sort
of job I do. Once you have the basic Latex template set up
it becomes very easy. Latex is a set of macros built on TeX.
It is the standard for academic papers.
