George Bernard Shaw said that all great truths begin as blasphemies.
This is literally true: all of our most cherished beliefs -- that all
people should be equal before the law, that each of us should be
allowed to worship god in our own way, that no human being should hold
another as property, that the universe acts in accordance with natural
law -- were at one time things which you would have been jailed or
killed for saying.
The really intriguing thing is that there is no reason to believe we
today are exempt from this process. No doubt there are ideas which we
all now consider horrifying blasphemies which five hundred years from
now will be universally recognized as great truths. I have no idea what
they are, but there will be some.

If poetry comes not as naturally as leaves to a
tree it had better not come at all.
