The troubadours?
Get outta here! Stout, beefhearted fellas, one and all, they may have been
but no spirit-lamps there, no Poem of the Book--and no idea how the rainbow
worked either.
And it's not a _battle_ between "Vision & Science" for Graham any more than
it was for Grosseteste (Bacon made a battle out of everything, on the other
hand)--it was optics as a _synthesis_ of science and theology he was after,
but not of the needle-in-the-haystack, Thomas Aquinas-how are ya, Isadora
dancing angelically (interminably!) on her modernist pin(head) sort.
Bob and Hodge had no truck with scholasticism--they were gnostics, and they
knew the score: finitude---> "It has a hole in it"---> "the time hole" (just
Celan says, so lyrically).
Call _me_ a Romantic, willya? Here's yer head, Henry, what's yer hurry?
