Still winter here in Tasmania - but Spring is in the air!
Before the sand and salt spray hit the blinding white pages, I set aside
several magical reads to get through the last remaining winter nights:
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" - Ray Bradbury - a dark carnival - worth
it simply for the phrase "Dust Witch" and the wild haunting music of the
calliope
"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" - JK Rowling - pure magic :)
"What's the Land For?" - collected oral transcripts from pioneers, farmers
and trappers of the Central Highlands of Tasmania - the basis for a series
of rural poetic portraits I am working on - (still shaking the snow out of
my hair after a recent trip spent listening to wonderful stories of "eels
that taste of the earth" and trapping in mid winter, "when the dogs are in
full run - that's the finish of the world.."
Collected poetry of St John of the Cross - for its sheer mystical beauty
"Electric Light" - Seamus Heaney - for the vivid colour of the cover :)
(oh..and the instruction manual to my new telescope - fascinating for its
sections on "the definition of Power..."!)
