Dear John K
Diane Austin-Broos said that the greatest geneologist
in the 20th Century was T.G.H.Strehlow, who also
happened to dedicate his life to musicalising his
fathers wooden renderings of the Aboriginal poetics
and mythic stories of the Arrernte of Central
Australia.(see Aranda und Loritja Stämme in Zentral
Australia, 1907-1922 & Som=ngs of Central Australia,
1971)
So with his films, that wonderful landscape
photography, that traced 'places' and recorded with
remarkable fidelity not simply their poetic
correspondence/s but also, recorded faithfully those
people directly linked to these sites/sights. It is a
synesthetic(sic) relatiopnship that I find very
interesting, a system that transcribes belief and
person/object(syncretic).
Kominos goes "right' into space-talk, just like a real
estate agent might. No doubt the international plot to
globalise, has infected his judgements in these
regional concerns.
The matter of 'cultural rights' and 'art-talk' is
white mans jibber. Everything is political, the
photographs of Joseph Mallard are his contribution to
the Independence Movement of Indigenous People of the
Oceanic Region. His PNG ideas are even more
disburbing. The problems have to do with the colonial
amnesia. Perhaps James K.Baxter and Colin McCahon
examined these difficult areas in a new and radical
format in the New Zealand of the 60s and 70s. The
Jindy's made curious attempts at interface in the late
30s to 50s, and since 1967 Aboriginal themselves have
had a better chance to represent their actual concerns
politically, philosophically and poetically in this
place. But LANDSCAPE....I always liked John Berger's
discourse on Gainsborough's Mr & Mrs Anderson.
John there was no sub-text to my Geraldton reference
to Mallard's work. Just have a look at it first, I
know you like photography, Geraldton, and writing on
artists. Let it fk=low baby.
isn't it,
Nice to see the writers and visual artists mingling
here together, don't you wish there were more of it?
my best wishes
RL
