Hi Chris and anyone interested,
Found my copy of Susan Hampton's White Dog Sonnets. If I may quote a few
lines, without disturbing copyright here are two short selections:
[The title, by the way, comes from a Buddhist monk quoted in the poem as
saying 'Cowardice .../ is a white dog in a thicket/ of elephants and
tigers.' ...]
This extract is from early in the book:
'But you're not here,' you say,
'and I feel like I have to put my heart
in my pocket. I mean. You live with me
for two years and then you move
back to your place
and start writing me love poems.'
and the last lines of the sequence:
In the matrices of revolutions
these holes in talk and ordinary events,
the inside self is at home. When I go there
she's waiting for me, when I go to your house
we appear between the opera tapes
the black chair your light coming in
at acute angles from outside.
Published by Fab Press Sydney 1987. Fab also published one of Joanne Burns'
books. The press wouldn't exist anymore, of course.
For information, in case folks wondered what Chris and I were chattering
about.
Cheers,
Jill
