Grotowski is a distinguished Polish theatre director who wrote The Poor
Theatre (I'm sorry, my copy's gone awol; perhaps someone else can supply
details) in which he outlines his aesthetic and working process, among
other things, the credo of the actor as a kind of saint. It was written
a couple of decades ago, but is pretty fascinating even if you're not
interested in acting for its focus on the creation of immediacy in an
artistic process. He was at the time famous for producing work with no
intention of having an audience. One thing he certainly didn't do was
make theatre as a _commodity_.
