Thanks, Alison. Your Neruda quote (where's it from?) is very apposite,
because things have escalated & the P are surrounding everyone, marching
through the Media centre and various sleeping places ransacking people's
possessions, helicopters en masse terrorizing the city ~ Martin walking
along the pavement got the P boot in his face, literally, just because he
dared to walk the street, many people have been beaten up, I heard the huge
cacophony of many hoarse voices & whistles against the chattering roar of
the helicopters like a scene from the _Inferno_ updated, & now Nina was on
the phone again, the school they're staying in is surrounded, in the gym
opposite wounded people have apparently been beaten to death, somebody was
dragged out in a corpse-bag; N., amazingly cool & M., drunk (they were in
the only open pizzeria earlier & everything sounded bad but not totally out
of control) & crazed by grief & rage, don't really know what to do, all
their things have been stolen, they don't know by whom & we're waiting &
hoping for the next call soon. I've never experienced anything like this
myself, teargas & thwacking with truncheons, yes, but not the senseless
beating of injured people, wanton murder, the total breakdown of humanity
like in the Kristallnacht.
