a sonnet of mine...
On Friendship
She didn’t call it a leisure-bred whim.
She said, "I'd be happy with a video store
nearby, my romance novels, and the gym."
How could she understand the things I pour
out when she doesn't have these needs? Or does she?
Waiting for her babyfather to call
from where he's visiting his other baby,
turning her cheek against the peeling wall
to keep her daughter from seeing her face,
"I wish I had your problems," she told me,
"Now wouldn't that be a lovely change of pace.
I'd take silence if I could just be free."
I told her to go and take it but she said,
"I couldn't sleep well without him in the bed."
