"Jumbled in a common box" is 1941, which would make it a couple of years
after he reached the States [but when, I'd guess, he'd still be using
British speech rhythms]. Something odd (and disastrous) +does+ happen to
Auden's rhythms at some point in the fifties. But this might just be time
rather than change of place.
