Yes, exactly. I had in mind the great Philadelphia painter Thomas Eakins,
whom you seem to have in mind as well. Classicism in his work achieves a
kind of surrealist (if not dadaish) charge. And I mean in the sense of
Ingres or David, not the predictable and coy de Chirico.
Sigh...
Hey, all this talk about rugby and buggering. I did both in my youth, when a
lad in Uruguay. How's that for an admission?! And I'll bet I'm the only
poet-critic-editor-translator in the world missing his two front teeth from
getting kicked in a scrum. We were playing Old Boys...
